Project Description: This project consisted of reverse engineering the "A Frame" and "Boom" of an aging drill rigs pipe handling system, while making sure to pay close attention to some areas of concern that the customer had been experiencing. In the engineering process our team looked at different ways to enhance the structural soundness of the units. Our improved design included fabricating the entire "Boom" section from heavier plate including the connection plates, and provided heavy duty hydraulic cylinder mounts for reinforcement.
The original "A Frame" made of a tubular construction was changed to a heavy plate weldment for durability, the main pivot was upgraded to stock hardened bushings, and it was equipped with heavy duty hydraulic cylinder mounts. This new "A Frame" and "Boom" will have much less downtime due to the updated structural design enhancements provided by Moran Iron Works, Inc.
